The 1-2-3-4 Cake is a classic, foolproof butter cake named for its simple ingredient ratio—1 cup butter, 2 cups sugar, 3 cups flour, and 4 eggs. It bakes into a soft, golden cake with a fine crumb and buttery flavor, perfect for any occasion from birthdays to afternoon tea.

Ingredients

1 cup butter

2 cups sugar

3 cups all-purpose flour

4 large eggs

1 cup milk

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour your cake pans, or line them with parchment paper for easy removal.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with milk. Mix just until combined—do not overmix.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and smooth the tops with a spatula.
  7. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting or serving.
