Ingredients

1 pound lean ground beef

1 large egg

1/2 cup panko bread crumbs

1/2 cup chopped red onion

13 teaspoons Asian chili garlic sauce (like Sambal Oelek)

1 tablespoon reduced sodium soy sauce

1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

1 tablespoon lime juice

1/2 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon pepper

For the Hoisin Ketchup:

1/4 cup ketchup

1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

1 tablespoon reduced sodium soy sauce

1/2 tablespoon lime juice

For the Garlic Chili Mayonnaise:

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1 teaspoon Asian chili garlic sauce (optional)

For the Asian Slaw:

4 cups angel hair coleslaw (or regular coleslaw)

1 cup matchstick carrots

2 teaspoons rice vinegar

1 teaspoon reduced sodium soy sauce

1 teaspoon lime juice

1/2 teaspoon sugar

1/2 teaspoon sesame oil

Other:

4 hamburger buns

1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk the egg. Add all remaining burger ingredients and mix with your hands until just combined. Form into 4 patties, making a deep impression in the center of each to ensure even cooking. Refrigerate for 15 minutes.
  2. Mix together the hoisin ketchup ingredients in a small bowl and refrigerate. Do the same with the chili garlic mayonnaise in a separate bowl.
  3. In a large bowl, combine coleslaw mix and matchstick carrots. Toss with rice vinegar, soy sauce, lime juice, sugar, and sesame oil. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  4. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for 3–4 minutes on the first side until browned. Flip, reduce heat to medium, cover, and cook an additional 3–5 minutes or until the burgers are cooked to your desired doneness.
  5. Toast the hamburger buns if desired. Spread the bottom bun with chili garlic mayo, add the burger patty, top with hoisin ketchup, followed by a generous spoonful of Asian slaw. Finish with the top bun and serve immediately.

Notes

Adjust the amount of chili garlic sauce to your spice preference.

For a lighter version, substitute with ground turkey or chicken.

For a vegetarian option, use a plant-based patty and vegan versions of the sauces and mayo.

For a low-carb version, serve in lettuce wraps instead of buns.
