Ingredients

For the doughnuts:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg

1 large egg, lightly beaten

2/3 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup apple butter

1/3 cup pure maple syrup

1/3 cup apple cider

1/3 cup plain yogurt

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

For the glaze:

4 tablespoons caramel sauce

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

1 cup confectioners’ sugar

13 tablespoons apple cider (as needed for consistency)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F and spray a doughnut pan generously with baking spray.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, brown sugar, apple butter, maple syrup, apple cider, yogurt, and vegetable oil until smooth.
  4. Add dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir just until combined.
  5. Fill each doughnut mold about halfway and bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the tops spring back when touched.
  6. Cool doughnuts in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.
  7. For the glaze, mix caramel sauce, sea salt, and confectioners’ sugar. Add cider 1 tablespoon at a time until smooth and dip-worthy.
  8. Dip each cooled doughnut into the glaze and set on the rack to allow the glaze to firm.

Notes

Sprinkle chopped nuts over the glaze for added crunch.

Cook down the cider for a stronger apple flavor.

Swap the caramel glaze for cinnamon sugar for a simpler coating.

Glaze doughnuts just before serving if storing ahead.
