Baked Cheese Buns are a cheesy, comforting treat made with soft dough and a gooey cheese filling. Perfect as a snack, breakfast, or side dish, these buns are easy to make and versatile enough to be customized with different cheeses and spices.

Ingredients

1 cup warm milk (110°F)

2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast

1 tbsp sugar

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp salt

4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

1 large egg

2 cups grated cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, or a combination)

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast:

    • In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  • Prepare the Dough:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.

  • Knead the Dough:

    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  • Let the Dough Rise:

    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  • Shape the Buns:

    • Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Flatten each piece, place a tablespoon of grated cheese in the center, and fold the dough around the cheese to form a bun.

  • Second Rise:

    • Place the buns on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.

  • Preheat the Oven:

    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the buns with milk or a beaten egg for a golden finish.

  • Bake:

    • Bake for 15-20 minutes, until the buns are golden brown and the cheese is melted.

  • Serve:

    • Let cool slightly before serving to enjoy them at their melty best.
