This classic Southern custard pie is a timeless dessert that’s as comforting as it is delicious. With its smooth, velvety custard filling nestled in a buttery pie crust, this pie is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

1 unbaked pie crust

1 cup sugar

6 large eggs (room temperature)

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

3 cups whole milk (room temperature)

⅛ teaspoon nutmeg (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly spray a 9½-inch pie pan with nonstick spray.
  2. Place the unbaked pie crust in the prepared pie pan, pressing the dough gently against the sides to ensure it fits snugly.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg, and vanilla extract for 2 minutes until smooth and combined. Gradually add the milk and whisk for an additional 3 minutes until the mixture is fully incorporated.
  4. Pour the custard mixture into the prepared pie crust. Sprinkle the remaining ⅛ teaspoon of nutmeg lightly over the top of the custard for extra flavor.
  5. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the custard is set. You can perform the “jiggle test” by gently shaking the pie pan. If the center of the pie jiggles slightly, it’s done!
  6. Allow the pie to cool completely. Slice and serve. This pie tastes best when chilled, so refrigerate it for a few hours before serving if desired.

Notes

You can substitute 2% milk or non-dairy milk (like almond milk) for a lighter version.

If you prefer, use a store-bought pie crust or a graham cracker crust to simplify the process.

Experiment with different spices like cinnamon or allspice for a unique twist.
