Ingredients

For the Donuts:

All-purpose flour

Whole milk (warmed to 105°F)

Instant yeast

Granulated sugar

Eggs

Butter (softened and slightly melted)

Vanilla extract

Salt

Nutmeg

Oil for frying (vegetable or peanut oil)

For the Vanilla Glaze:

Powdered sugar (sifted)

Whole milk

Vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough:
In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine all dough ingredients. Knead using the dough hook until smooth and elastic (about 5–7 minutes).

  2. First Rise:
Transfer dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).

  3. Shape the Donuts:
Roll the dough to ½-inch thickness. Use a 3-inch donut cutter to cut out 18 donuts and reserve the centers for donut holes. Place on a lined tray and let rise for 20–30 minutes.

  4. Fry the Donuts:
Heat 2–3 inches of oil in a heavy pot to 360°F (182°C). Fry 2–3 donuts at a time for 45 seconds per side or until golden brown. Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined rack.

  5. Glaze the Donuts:
In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Dip each warm donut into the glaze and let the excess drip off.

  6. Set the Glaze:
Place donuts on a wire rack and let glaze set for about 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Glaze Variations: Try chocolate, maple, or cinnamon sugar for different flavor profiles.

Filled Option: Skip cutting the center hole and pipe in jam or cream after frying.

Toppings: Add sprinkles or crushed candy for special occasions.
