Irish Soda Bread is a classic, easy-to-make quick bread that’s perfect for any meal. Made with just four simple ingredients—flour, baking soda, salt, and buttermilk—this bread is naturally leavened, offering a tender crumb and crispy crust. Ideal for serving with butter, jam, or alongside soups and stews, it brings the authentic flavors of Ireland to your table in under an hour.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups buttermilk

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add Buttermilk: Pour in the buttermilk and stir until a dough forms.
  • Shape the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, gently shape the dough into a round loaf.
  • Score the Top: Place the dough on a baking sheet and score a shallow “X” on top with a sharp knife.
  • Bake: Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Cool: Let the bread cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Variations:

  • Add-ins: Incorporate raisins or currants for a touch of sweetness.
  • Whole Wheat: Substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier loaf.
  • Herbs and Cheese: Add chopped herbs and shredded cheese for a savory twist.

Storage/Reheating:

  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • Freezing: Slice and freeze for up to 3 months. Toast slices directly from the freezer.
