These homemade Peppermint Patties combine a smooth peppermint filling with a rich chocolate coating for a festive, minty treat perfect for Christmas.

Ingredients

2¼ cups (280 g) powdered sugar, sifted

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

2 teaspoons peppermint extract

2 tablespoons heavy cream

8 oz (225 g) semi-sweet or dark chocolate, chopped

1 teaspoon vegetable oil (optional, for smoother chocolate coating)

Optional: festive sprinkles or crushed candy canes for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, beat together the powdered sugar, softened butter, peppermint extract, and heavy cream until a smooth, stiff dough forms.
  2. Roll the dough into small balls and flatten them into discs about 1 inch wide. Place the discs on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Freeze for 20 minutes to firm them up.
  3. Meanwhile, melt the chocolate (with vegetable oil if using) in the microwave or over a double boiler until smooth and glossy.
  4. Once the peppermint discs are firm, dip each one into the melted chocolate, allowing the excess chocolate to drip off. Place the chocolate-dipped patties back on the parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. If desired, sprinkle festive sprinkles or crushed candy canes on top of the patties while the chocolate is still soft.
  6. Place the patties in the refrigerator and chill until the chocolate sets completely, about 30 minutes.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate instead of semi-sweet chocolate.

To make it dairy-free, use plant-based butter and dairy-free cream.

Feel free to experiment with different flavored extracts like vanilla or almond for a twist on the classic peppermint patty.
