Khao Jee is a popular Thai street food consisting of crispy, egg-coated sticky rice patties with a savory flavor. The golden crust and chewy interior make it a perfect breakfast or snack, and it pairs wonderfully with tropical fruits.

Ingredients

4 cups glutinous rice (sticky rice)

1 ½ tablespoons Golden Mountain sauce

1 teaspoon salt

4 eggs (chicken or duck eggs)

Instructions

  1. Soak the glutinous rice for at least 4 hours, or overnight. Rinse the rice three times to remove excess starch. Steam the rice in a cheesecloth parcel for 20 minutes.
  2. Allow the sticky rice to cool slightly, then knead it into hamburger-shaped patties.
  3. In a bowl, beat the eggs with Golden Mountain sauce and set aside.
  4. Heat a grill or frying pan over low heat. Grill the sticky rice patties, flipping them regularly. Brush the patties with the egg mixture twice while grilling, and season with salt. Grill until golden brown, being careful not to overcook.
  5. Once crispy and golden, remove the patties from the grill and serve hot. They can be enjoyed on their own or paired with tropical fruits for breakfast.

Notes

For a sweet version, drizzle honey or coconut milk over the cooked patties.

Add chili flakes or chili paste to the egg mixture for a spicy version.

Mix fresh herbs like cilantro or mint into the rice for added flavor.
