Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese (or your preferred melting cheese)
  • 2 tbsp baking soda
  • Coarse salt, for sprinkling

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough: Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to activate. Add butter, flour, and salt, then knead until smooth.
  • Shape the Pretzels: Roll the dough into long ropes, place mozzarella cheese in the center, and seal the dough tightly around the cheese.
  • Boil: Dissolve baking soda in a large pot of water and bring it to a simmer. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds before transferring them to a greased baking sheet.
  • Bake: Bake at 425°F for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Sprinkle with coarse salt.
  • Serve: Let the pretzels cool slightly before serving with marinara sauce, cheese sauce, or garlic butter for dipping.

Notes

  • Cheese Variations: You can substitute mozzarella with cheddar, gouda, or a cheese blend for different flavors.
  • Vegan Option: Use vegan cheese and plant-based butter to make these pretzels vegan-friendly.
  • Make Ahead: The dough can be prepared in advance and stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
  • Topping Ideas: Experiment with garlic powder, sesame seeds, or everything bagel seasoning for an extra burst of flavor.
