Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon lemon or almond extract (optional)
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 5½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough
    • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
    • Add eggs, vanilla extract, and optional lemon/almond extract, mixing well.
    • Blend in sour cream until smooth.
  • Combine Dry Ingredients
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
    • Gradually mix dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  • Chill the Dough
    • Divide dough into two portions, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 1–2 hours.
  • Roll and Cut
    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Roll out dough to ¼-inch thickness on a floured surface.
    • Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters.
  • Bake
    • Place cookies 2 inches apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
    • Bake for 8–9 minutes or until edges start to turn golden.
    • Cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  • Frosting (Optional)
    • Once cooled, spread or pipe buttercream frosting on top. Decorate as desired.
