A beautifully twisted, soft, and slightly sweet Star Bread filled with rich Nutella layers. Despite its stunning appearance, it’s simple to shape and perfect for holidays, brunches, or any special morning.

Ingredients

Dough:

1/4 cup sugar

3/4 cup milk

1/4 cup water

3 1/4 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (dough should be tacky)

1/4 cup unsalted butter

1 package (2 1/4 tsp) instant yeast

1 tsp salt

1 large egg

Filling & Topping:

1 cup chocolate hazelnut spread (such as Nutella)

1 beaten egg (for egg wash)

Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Heat the milk, water, and butter in a small saucepan over medium heat just until the butter melts and the mixture reaches 105–110°F. Remove from heat.
  2. In a large bowl or stand mixer, whisk together 3 1/4 cups flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
  3. Add the warm milk mixture and the egg to the flour mixture and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough by hand for 8–10 minutes or in a stand mixer for 5–6 minutes. Add up to 1/4 cup extra flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, if the dough feels too sticky. It should be soft, smooth, and slightly tacky. Shape into a ball.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turn to coat, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 45–60 minutes, until doubled.
  6. Punch down the dough, divide it into 4 equal pieces, shape each into a ball, cover, and rest for 10 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet or pizza stone with parchment.
  8. Roll out one dough ball into a 10–12-inch circle and place it on the prepared sheet. Spread 1/3 cup Nutella over it, leaving a 1/2–1-inch border.
  9. Roll out the second ball, place it on top, and spread another 1/3 cup Nutella. Repeat with the third layer.
  10. Roll the fourth dough ball and place it on top without adding Nutella.
  11. Place a 2 1/2–3-inch round cutter in the center. Cut the dough into 16 equal strips from the outer edge to the cutter, keeping the center intact.
  12. Remove the cutter and twist two adjacent strips away from each other 2–3 times, then pinch the ends to seal. Repeat to form 8 points.
  13. Brush the top with beaten egg.
  14. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until deep golden and the center reads about 190°F.
  15. Cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Use cinnamon sugar instead of Nutella for a classic cinnamon-roll filling.

Fruit jams or lemon curd create a bright, fruity variation.

Add vanilla or orange zest to the dough for extra flavor.

Brush with melted butter instead of powdered sugar for a glossy finish.
