Ingredients

12 lb whole turkey

5 tbsp butter, divided

1 package dry bread stuffing mix

1 cup chopped celery

¼ cup chopped onion

4 slices toasted white bread, torn

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Dry the turkey thoroughly and remove any giblets. Place it in a roasting pan.
  3. In a saucepan, boil water and 4 tbsp butter. Stir in the stuffing mix, cover, and let it rest for 5 minutes.
  4. In a skillet, sauté the chopped celery and onion in 1 tbsp butter for 5-7 minutes, or until softened.
  5. Add the sautéed vegetables and torn toasted bread to the stuffing mix. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let the mixture cool slightly.
  6. Loosely stuff the turkey cavity and neck with the stuffing mixture.
  7. Rub the turkey with vegetable oil and cover it loosely with aluminum foil.
  8. Roast the turkey for 3½ to 4 hours, or until the thigh reaches an internal temperature of 180°F (85°C) and the stuffing reaches 165°F (70°C).
  9. For extra browning, uncover the turkey for the last 30 minutes of roasting.
  10. Once cooked, let the turkey rest for 25 minutes before carving and serving.

Notes

For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free bread and stuffing mix.

Herbed stuffing: Add fresh thyme, rosemary, or sage to enhance the flavor.

Vegetarian version: Use vegetable broth instead of turkey stock.

For a sweeter touch, add dried cranberries to the stuffing mix.
