Festive Cherry Snowball Cookies that are buttery, tender, and melt-in-your-mouth, filled with sweet maraschino cherries and finished with a snowy double coating of powdered sugar.

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup powdered sugar (for the dough)

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup maraschino cherries, drained, patted dry, and finely chopped

1 cup powdered sugar (for rolling, as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Drain maraschino cherries thoroughly, pat completely dry, and chop finely.
  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and powdered sugar until light and smooth.
  4. Mix in vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add flour and salt, mixing just until a soft dough forms.
  6. Gently fold in chopped cherries.
  7. Scoop dough and roll into 1-inch balls, placing them on prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 12–14 minutes, until bottoms are lightly golden.
  9. While cookies are still warm, roll them in powdered sugar.
  10. Allow cookies to cool completely, then roll again in powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Drying the cherries well prevents excess moisture in the dough.

Rolling twice in powdered sugar creates the classic snowball look.

Do not overbake to maintain a tender texture.

Cookies can be frozen before sugar coating.
