A rich, creamy hot chocolate topped with golden toasted marshmallows and optional indulgent toppings like whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Ingredients

1 ½ cups whole milk (or any milk of your choice)

¼ cup heavy cream (optional for extra richness)

⅓ cup chopped semi-sweet or dark chocolate (use a good quality bar, not chips)

1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

1 to 2 tablespoons sugar (adjust to your taste)

¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Pinch of sea salt

Handful of mini marshmallows

Optional toppings: Extra chocolate shavings, cinnamon or nutmeg, whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Warm the Milk and Cream: In a small saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk and cream together until steaming and just about to simmer. Be careful not to let it boil.
  2. Whisk in Chocolate and Cocoa: Add the chopped chocolate and cocoa powder to the saucepan. Whisk continuously until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture becomes smooth and glossy.
  3. Sweeten and Flavor: Stir in the sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt. Taste the hot chocolate and adjust the sweetness with more sugar if needed.
  4. Toast the Marshmallows: For the perfect toasted marshmallows, spread a layer of mini marshmallows on a baking sheet and broil for 30 to 60 seconds until golden brown. Watch carefully to avoid burning. Alternatively, use a kitchen torch for a more controlled toasting.
  5. Assemble the Mug: Pour the hot chocolate into a mug. Top it with the toasted marshmallows and, if desired, add additional toppings like whipped cream or chocolate shavings.
  6. Serve Immediately: Enjoy while hot, letting the marshmallows melt slightly into the drink for extra richness and flavor.

Notes

If you prefer a thicker texture, add more chocolate and reduce the milk slightly.

For a vegan version, substitute dairy milk with plant-based milk and use a dairy-free whipped cream.

To make the marshmallows extra toasty, use a kitchen torch or broil them in the oven.

For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder to the drink.

Leftover marshmallows can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
