Ingredients

1 prepared angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes

1 (21 oz / 595 g) can cherry pie filling

1 (8 oz / 225 g) package cream cheese, softened

1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar

1 (8 oz / 225 g) container whipped topping

1 (3.4 oz / 96 g) package vanilla instant pudding mix

1½ cups (360 ml) cold milk

½ cup (50 g) toasted sliced almonds or crushed vanilla wafers (optional)

Extra whipped topping for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Spread half of the angel food cake cubes evenly across the bottom of a 9×13-inch glass baking dish.
  2. Spoon the cherry pie filling evenly over the cake layer.
  3. Top with the remaining cake cubes and gently press them down.
  4. Beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Add the powdered sugar and beat until creamy, then gently fold in the whipped topping. Spread evenly over the cake.
  5. Whisk the vanilla pudding mix with the cold milk for about 2 minutes until thickened. Spread evenly over the cream layer.
  6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results.
  7. Before serving, sprinkle with toasted almonds or crushed vanilla wafers and garnish with extra whipped topping if desired.

Notes

Overnight chilling provides the best flavor and texture.

Substitute blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, or peach pie filling for a different variation.

Add a little lemon zest to the cream cheese mixture for a citrus twist.

Use crushed graham crackers or toasted pecans instead of the suggested topping if desired.

Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Freeze for up to 1 month and thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.
