This old fashioned easy apple crisp features tender cinnamon-spiced apples beneath a buttery golden oat topping. It’s a comforting homemade dessert that’s delicious served warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Ingredients

6 Golden Delicious apples, peeled and chopped (or other baking apples, chopped or sliced)

2 Tbsp granulated sugar

3/4 tsp ground cinnamon

1 1/2 tsp lemon juice

1 cup light brown sugar

3/4 cup old fashioned oats (or quick oats)

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp ground cinnamon

Pinch of kosher salt

1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and butter or lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples, granulated sugar, 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and lemon juice until evenly coated.
  3. Spread the apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and kosher salt.
  5. Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter, two forks, or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Evenly sprinkle the topping over the apples and gently pat it into an even layer.
  7. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling around the edges.
  8. Allow the crisp to cool slightly before serving warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or salted caramel sauce if desired.
