3/4 cup granulated sugar

2 large egg yolks, at room temperature

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 tablespoon orange zest

1/2 cup fresh orange juice

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1 cup confectioners sugar

3 tablespoons fresh orange juice (for icing)

2 teaspoons orange zest (for icing)

1 tablespoon unsalted butter, at room temperature (for icing)

2 tablespoons cream cheese (optional, for icing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cream the butter and granulated sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
  3. Reduce mixer speed and add egg yolks and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  4. Add the orange juice and orange zest and mix just until combined.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and sea salt.
  6. Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  7. Roll dough into 1-inch balls, place on the baking sheet, and gently flatten.
  8. Bake for 10–11 minutes until the bottoms are lightly golden.
  9. Cool briefly on the pan, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. For the icing, mix confectioners sugar, orange juice, orange zest, butter, and cream cheese (if using) until smooth.
  11. Spread icing over cooled cookies and allow it to set for about 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

Fresh orange juice and zest provide the best flavor.

Add a drop of orange food coloring for a decorative icing.

Cookies can be dusted with powdered sugar instead of icing.

Separate iced cookies with parchment paper when storing.

Un-iced cookies freeze well for later use.
