These Star-Spangled Cake Pops are fun, festive, and perfect for celebrating patriotic occasions like the 4th of July. Made from a vanilla cake base, creamy frosting, and decorated with vibrant red, white, and blue candy melts and silver star sprinkles, they are the perfect dessert for any summer gathering or holiday event.

Ingredients

1 box vanilla cake mix

Ingredients listed on the box (usually eggs, oil, and water)

½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1 ½ cups powdered sugar

12 tbsp heavy cream or milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

16 oz white chocolate or white candy melts

Red, white, and blue candy melts or colored chocolate (for drizzling)

Silver star sprinkles or edible glitter stars

Lollipop sticks

Star-shaped cookie cutter (about 2.5–3 inches wide)

Cake pop or styrofoam stand

Instructions

  1. Bake and Cool the Cake: Preheat the oven according to the cake mix instructions, usually at 350°F (175°C). Prepare and bake the cake in a 9×13-inch pan, following the package directions. Once baked, allow the cake to cool completely.
  2. Make the Frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Slowly add heavy cream or milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches a soft, spreadable consistency.
  3. Make the Cake Pop Dough: Crumble the cooled cake into a large mixing bowl using your hands or a fork. Add about ¾ of the frosting and mix until the dough resembles a soft, cohesive texture similar to cookie dough. If needed, add more frosting until the mixture holds its shape.
  4. Shape the Stars: Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Press the cake mixture into a ¾-inch thickness on a clean work surface. Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out star shapes and place them on the tray. Insert a lollipop stick into the base of each star. Freeze for 20–30 minutes to set.
  5. Coat with Chocolate: Melt the white chocolate or candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring each time until smooth. Dip each star into the melted chocolate, ensuring full coverage. Tap gently to remove excess chocolate and place the cake pops upright in a cake pop stand to set.
  6. Decorate: Melt the red, white, and blue candy melts separately. Use a piping bag or spoon to drizzle the candy melts over the coated cake pops in random patterns. While the coating is still wet, press silver star sprinkles or edible glitter stars onto the surface. Let the decorations set completely at room temperature before serving.

Notes

For variations, swap the vanilla cake mix for chocolate cake mix or try different colors of candy melts to match your event’s theme.

If you don’t have a star-shaped cookie cutter, you can use other shapes or freehand the shapes with a knife.

To avoid cracks in the chocolate coating, make sure the cake pops are cool before dipping, and don’t dip them into too thick a layer of chocolate.
